What is the TfL Topographical Assessment?

To get your Private Hire Drivers licence in London, you are required by Transport for London (TfL) to pass 3 tests. One of the first tests you will take is the Topographical Test. This is a computer-based test which involves answering multiple-choice questions, and route plotting questions on a computer screen. The Topographical assessment tests the driver’s ability to understand how to navigate London using a traditional A to Z London Map.

Do I need to take the Topographical test?

If you are applying for a new TfL Private Hire Driver’s Licence, you will be required to pass the Topographical assessment before you are licensed to work as a PHV driver. If you are renewing your PHV drivers licence, you will not have to take the Topographical test. However, if you didn’t renew your PHV driver’s licence in time and you are asked to make a new application, you will need to complete and pass the Topographical assessment again.

Do existing drivers need to take topographical test?

If you are already a licenced PHV driver in London, you will not have to take the Topographical assessment again. But, if you don’t renew your PHV drivers licence in time, then you may need to make a new PHV drivers licence application and this would involve taking and passing the Topographical assessment again.

Where do I book my TfL Topographical test?

You cannot book your Topographical assessment. Once you’ve submitted your PHV driver’s licence application form to TfL, they will invite you to attend your Topographical assessment along with the SERU Assessment and English Speaking Test.

How much is the TfL Topographical test?

The Topographical Test with TfL costs £36. If you fail, you can retake the test one more time for £16 (this will be on a different date). This fee is paid on the day of the test at the TfL test centre and you can only pay using a credit or debit card. You cannot use an American Express card, as TfL does not accept them.

The TfL Topographical assessment is taken at a TfL test centre. Which is located in London. The address for the TfL Topographical test centre is 14 Pier Walk, London, SE10 0ES. There is also a test centre in West Kensington.

Do I need an AZ Atlas Map for Topographical test?

On your Topographical assessment day, you will be provided with an AZ Master Atlas of Greater London. You will need to know how to use this. So, we would advise you to have your own copy at home to practice with before taking your actual test.
